Staff Spotlight:

 Michael (Mike) Gerty

By Irena Garic

Where are you from, and where did you grow up?

I was born in Georgia. I spent the majority of my youth in southern California. I went to High School in Escondido, CA.

Tells us more about your career path at Northwestern University, when did you start, and did you always work at the Chemistry Department?

I joined Northwestern in October of 2017 as the Senior Manager for Labs and Facilities which is the position I hold today.

What is your favorite thing about working at the Chemistry Department?

I enjoy the wide variety of responsibilities, every day is a new adventure. I also enjoy getting to know the staff and faculty. I am fascinated by the different backgrounds and stories of the people that make Northwestern Chemistry function on a daily basis.

Before working at Northwestern, what was the most unusual or interesting job you have ever had?

Prior to working at Northwestern I was in the Navy for 20 years. My most rewarding job was working with the new recruits at the Navy’s boot camp. Working with the young men and women who have decided to serve their country is awe inspiring. For many the Navy represented their first job experience and first experience away from their family.

What would you do (for a career) if you weren't doing this?

I am still undecided on what I would like to do when I grow up!

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?

I would like to meet John Adams. I would love to hear the story of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and his subsequent writings on the Defense of the Constitution.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

I like to hang out with my kids and go to Great America. I spent enough time overseas away from my family that I now enjoy being at home the most of all.

What is your favorite pastime?

I enjoy woodworking.
